答案取决于测量了什么,以及采信哪些报告。2018 年描述的图潘病毒(Tupanvirus)头部直径约 0.45 微米,连接着一条长尾。其颗粒平均长约 1.2 微米,但由于尾部长度不一,有些能达到 2.3 微米。
2019 年,研究人员在箭虫(一种小型海洋动物)的电子显微镜照片中报告了长度超过 4 微米的纺锤形颗粒。他们认为这些颗粒是病毒,是迄今报告过的最长病毒。他们还呼吁对这些颗粒的基因展开研究,以进一步了解它们。
从永久冻土中复苏
Pithovirus 来自 2000 年在西伯利亚东北部采集的一份永久冻土(常年冻结的土壤)样本。放射性碳测年显示,样本所在的地层已有超过 3 万年的历史。研究人员将样本混入阿米巴变形虫(一种单细胞生物)的培养物中,病毒随后开始在其体内增殖。
研究团队选择阿米巴变形虫,是因为用它们来测试古老病毒是否仍具有感染性,是一种安全的方法。他们提出,全球变暖、采矿或钻探导致永久冻土融化,未来可能释放出对人类或动物有害的病毒。
